At some point in 2016, you probably hired new employees for your team or company. There were likely a few high performers, but also some new hires that probably didn’t pan out as planned.
Perhaps there wasn’t a cultural fit, or maybe the experience you were looking for just wasn’t there. Well, we all make mistakes. Luckily we are heading into a new year, which means a fresh start and all sorts of new year’s resolutions, personally and professionally.
In 2017, make these new year’s hiring resolutions to improve your company:
- Behavioral, or “first-round,” screenings will be a priority. These types of tests not only show if a candidate is a good cultural fit, but can reveal their values, ethics, whether they are a team player, how well the problem-solve and more. Make it a point to add behavioral screening to your repertoire of hiring tactics if you haven’t already.
- Skills tests will be implemented where necessary. Does your worker need to be able to assemble certain products? Give them a dexterity test. Does your worker need to have impeccable written communication skills? Give them a writing test. Don’t wait until you’ve hired someone to find out if they possess your must-have skills.
- Positions won’t be left open more than 90 days. If you’re struggling to find the “perfect” worker, perhaps the position is too versatile for one worker, or your expectations are too high. If you think what you’re asking isn’t unreasonable, bite the bullet and enlist the help of a professional recruiter: you’ll save more time and resources in the long run.
- The hiring process will be clear-cut for candidates. If your hiring process is long and drawn out, or if they need to meet with multiple levels of management or take a test, let your candidates know. Walk candidates through every step of the process so they don’t become confused, or drop out of the running altogether.
- People will be treated like your best assets. In 2016, top talent had to be snagged from the competition– and that’s not going away in 2017 either. Make sure your company and its available positions are desirable by offering competitive wages, benefits, PTO, flexible hours and remote work opportunities. These perks will go a long way in keeping your current employees happy and engaged, too.
Put poor processes in the past! Make these hiring resolutions for 2017 and watch your business go from good to great.
